The rank of sergeant is one of thirteen enlisted Army ranks that range from private to sergeant major. The thirteen ranks are divided into the three groups of junior enlisted, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and senior NCOs. A sergeant, which is categorized as E-5, falls into the NCO group.
Sergeants typically lead a small team of soldiers, and are responsible for managing soldiers as they complete daily tasks and objectives. A front line leader, Sergeants are also responsible for the training and appearance of their soldiers, and that all equipment assigned to their unit is properly cared for. To be eligible for the rank of Sergeant, soldiers must receive a command recommendation, graduate from a leadership development course, and hold a high school diploma, college diploma, or GED. Moreover, candidates must have three years of military service.
